Refilling Fluid for the Hydraulic Power Steering System
Method 1
Lift front of the car, so the front wheels are off the ground.
Fill the reservoir to full and start the engine and then turn it off quickly.
Refill the fluid.
Start the engine and move the steering wheel slightly and then turn it off.
Refill the fluid.
Start the engine and then move it slowly lock to lock with the wheels off the ground. If you hear it whine as you move through the entire sweep, STOP the engine and refill the fluid.
Done.
The trick is to NOT put air into the system when you work on it.
Moving the fluid through the entire system without developing excess pressure (because the wheels need very little assist off the ground) is the trick that prevents forcing air into the fluid.
Method 2
Lift front of the car, so the front wheels are off the ground.
Fill the reservoir to full and start the engine.
Grab the front wheel & tire assembly with both hands and turn form stop to stop a few times.
Done.
Removing air bubbles from the system
Lift front of the car, so the front wheels are off the ground.
Fill the reservoir to full and start the engine.
Grab the front wheel & tire assembly with both hands and turn form stop to stop a few times.
It will bleed enough of the air out so that the problem will go away in a short amount of time on it’s own.
